What Is a Good Typing Speed?

WPM counts every five correct characters as one word, so your result shows how much correct text you type per minute.

These are practice goals, not averages — most typists sit around 40 WPM today. The everyday goal here is 40–60 WPM with 95% accuracy or higher

How the typing test works here

Every test runs in your browser. Pick a length, click into the text and start typing — the clock starts on your first keystroke, not on page load. Three numbers update while you work: words per minute, accuracy as a percentage, and the number of characters you got wrong.

When the time is up you get the full breakdown rather than a single score. The WPM figure counts only the characters you typed correctly. The result screen also reports accuracy, consistency, correct characters out of typed characters, a chart of how your speed moved during the attempt, and your previous best for that duration. Before you start, the settings panel lets you change difficulty, turn punctuation on or off, adjust the text size and choose a target WPM.

Nothing needs an account: tests, practice, lessons and games all run as a visitor, and your results stay on the device you used. If a score came from somewhere else, the tools below convert between the units different employers ask for.

Which test length should you pick?

The cards above cover the usual lengths. The two shortest attempts are separate pages rather than a switch on the test screen — open the 15-second typing test or the 30-second typing test, both also linked in the table below. Each length answers a slightly different question, so it is worth matching the test to what you actually want to know.

From beginner to faster typing

Type harder is the advice most people start with, and it is the reason their accuracy collapses. The order below uses what this site already gives you, in the sequence that works.

Start with the home row. The typing lessons run in order and add two keys at a time, beginning at the F and J lesson, so nothing new arrives until the last position is comfortable.
Put each finger where it belongs. The finger placement guide shows which fingers to use for typing each letter and number-row key on a standard US keyboard, and explains why a finger returns to the home row instead of staying stretched.
Practise the keys you keep missing. Weak keys practice builds its text from the characters you get wrong, so a bad key gets more repetitions than the comfortable ones.
Measure, then repeat. A WPM test gives you one number to compare with last week, and your progress page keeps the history in this browser so you can see whether the trend is actually moving.

Typing numbers and data entry

Digits do not behave like prose. There is no word rhythm to fall into, a single wrong character changes the value you were entering, and data entry work has traditionally been measured in keystrokes per hour instead of words per minute. That is why the number tools report KPH for keypad and record work, and characters per minute where digits and symbols are mixed — each result screen says which convention it used.

The number practice page collects nine focused drills; the main test engine adds mixed number text and the 10-key pad. All eleven are below.

Frequently Asked Questions

?What is a typing test?+

A typing test measures how many words you can type per minute (WPM) along with your accuracy. You are given a passage of text and timed while you type it. Your score is based on correct characters typed within the time limit.

?How can I improve my typing speed?+

Practice regularly with structured lessons. Start with the home row, learn proper finger placement, and use weak key practice to target specific characters that slow you down. Short daily sessions are more effective than occasional long ones.

?Should beginners focus on speed or accuracy?+

Accuracy first. Speed develops naturally once your fingers know where each key is without looking. Practise slowly and correctly, then gradually increase pace as your accuracy stays consistently above 95%.

?Do I need an account to practise typing?+

No. You can take typing tests, practise, and play games without creating an account. Your progress is saved locally in your browser. Sign up later if you want to track results across devices.

?Can I practise typing on a phone or tablet?+

Yes. Every page adjusts to a small screen with larger tap targets, and the number drills draw a keypad on screen so you can follow along without a physical one. Scores typed on glass are still worth watching, but a normal keyboard will give you a more realistic figure.
